Council Passes Garodnick Bill on Cool Roofs
The City Council passed a bill authored by Council Member Garodnick to align New York City's building code with industry standards for energy-efficient "cool roofs," requiring materials that will absorb less heat, thus requiring less energy to keep the building cool.
"In making our biggest polluters – our buildings – more energy efficient, it just makes sense that we align our building code with the leading industry standards," said Council Member Garodnick. "Encouraging cool roofs will lead to lower energy use and reduce the summertime heat island effect that causes temperatures to rise in cities like ours."
