COUNCIL MEMBER DAN GARODNICK AND SPEAKER MELISSA MARK-VIVERITO TO HOLD HEARING ON THE IMPACT OF TRUMP TRAVEL BANS ON NEW YORK CITY’S ECONOMY

City Hall– Today, New York City Council Member Dan Garodnick and Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced that the Committee on Economic Development will hold a hearing examining the economic impact of President Trump’s proposed travel bans on New York City’s economy.

“Make no mistake, Trump’s travel bans send a worldwide message that the United States is no longer open for business,” said Council Member Dan Garodnick, Chair of the Committee on Economic Development.  “New York City is the Crossroads of the World -- a global hub of business, tourism, and education. If these sectors are diminished, our tax base shrinks, jobs are lost, and the entire city suffers. I'm holding this hearing because proposed federal cuts are already threatening our city budget and we need a clear look at how Trump's travel ban weakens our local economy further.”

“The Trump administration’s attempts at enacting a federal travel ban have been both reckless and negatively impactful on the New York City economy. Our vibrant city thrives largely in part due to the contributions of the business, tourism, education sectors -- as well as the innovations and new ideas of our immigrant communities,” said Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. “I look forward to working with Council Member Garodnick and the Economic Development Committee to properly assess the impact of the travel ban on our budget and our communities at large.”

Members of the public are invited to attend the hearing and provide testimony.
