P.S. 116 in Kips Bay Starts School Year with Renovated Playground

KIPS BAY — The children at P.S. 116 in Kips Bay were treated to a special surprise on the first day of school: a repaved, repainted and reopened playground. The play space at P.S. 116, located on East 32nd Street between Second and Third avenues, has been undergoing renovations since this past fall, after City Council members Dan Garodnick and Rosie Mendez secured $375,000 to make over the outdoor area. On Wednesday, Garodnick cut the ceremonial ribbon at the playground, along with the school’s principal, Jane Hsu.

Pol: Put brakes on bike-cab gouging

Pedicab drivers who rip off their riders with hidden fees and expensive pricing schemes not revealed until the end of the trip are so rampant that the industry needs tougher regulations, a city councilman said yesterday. “We get many complaints about pedicabs,” said Councilman Dan Garodnick (D-Manhattan), chair of the Consumer Affairs Committee, which monitors the industry. Many of those complaints come from riders who were overcharged, hit with a price higher than they were initially told, or ended up paying extra because of fees not revealed until the end of the ride, he said.

In yet one more sign of the political winds shifting against stop-and-frisk, another candidate for citywide office has come out against the current practices of the NYPD tactic today. East Side Councilman Dan Garodnick, a top contender for Comptroller John Liu’s job in 2013, penned a letter to Police Commissioner Ray Kelly asking him to “firmly commit to revisiting this practice, reducing the overall number and disproportionate application of stops made each year and ensuring that stops are based on individualized reasonable suspicion.”
