Statement of Council Member Dan Garodnick on the Oak Creek Shooting
I want to extend my thoughts and prayers to the families and victims of the shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. As that community tries to cope with the senseless and tragic event, we all must make it known that when one group becomes the target of a hate-based attack, all of us as Americans are truly victims. We need to root out hatred and violence in all of its forms, and to our Sikh neighbors here in New York City, and throughout the country, please know that we stand with you at this difficult moment.

Statement of Council Member Dan Garodnick on the Army Corps of Engineers' approval of the 91st Street Marine Transfer Station
I want to add my words of disappointment over the recent decision by the Army Corps of Engineers to grant a permit for the 91st Street Marine Transfer Station.
I have been an opponent of this project since before I was elected to the New York City Council, and voted against the Mayor’s Solid Waste Management Plan years ago because it included the misguided reopening of this transfer facility. In short, a site like this should never be opened in a residential area, anywhere in New York City. I firmly hope that we will be able to stop the station’s progress through either political or legal means.

We must never forget the tragedy that befell the Israeli athletes and their coaches at the hands of terrorists at the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Such a cruel and vicious attack has no place in this world, and because it happened during a celebration of our common human values, it deserves special recognition on its 40th Anniversary.

The City Council will pass the Fiscal Year 2013 budget tonight. As a seven-year member of the Council’s Budget Negotiation Team, I want to recognize the dedicated work and advocacy of Speaker Quinn and my colleagues to ensure that we have a budget that restores critical funds for child care slots, after school programs, libraries, firehouses, cultural institutions, and other worthy initiatives.
While I will vote in support of this budget, I must raise a word of caution about where we are headed.
